If you could travel back to the early days of the Church, would you recognize it? Would the Mass seem familiar? Could you go to confession? Would you feel supported if you made a case against abortion? And would those early Christians be puzzled if you suggested praying to the saints?
In Roots of the Faith, Mike Aquilina makes it clear that as far as the essentials are concerned, that time-travel trip would reveal a Church familiar to Catholics today. Just as an acorn grows into a tree and yet remains the same plant, so the Catholic Church is a living organism that has grown from the faith of the earliest Christians into the Body of Christ we know today.

A Year with the Church Fathers - Patristic Wisdom for Daily Living, brings to us a sample of the early writings of the Church Fathers whose faith, and truths are shared with us in simple daily reflections, which we can draw upon. For example: To my surprise, I gave a talk on Saint Moses, a monk in the Forth century, who was a thief, robber and murder, but who when attacking a monastery met an abbot who was meek and mild and influenced him. St Moses eventually converted to the Coptic Church, then a branch of the Catholic Church, and though it was not an easy conversion, confessed his sins, became a monk, and through his leadership, converted many to the faith. In the book, on Day Two, I found this passage, after I returned home from the retreat, under the title, "SEE GOD EVERYWHERE", "St. John Cassian remembers how the wise old abbot Moses told him to see God everywhere. If you approach with a pure heart, the world around you will show you His face." There follows a fuller explanation on this theme, and at the end, a consideration, and closing prayer to reflect upon. Just enough to wet the appetite of the spiritual soul, and find wisdom for the day. I highly recommend this book. The leather cover, and ribbon, makes it a handsome book, and a years worth of wisdom, to enrich everyone, of all faiths, or those who seek the Truths passed down trough the ages from Christ.Pax et Bonum

Roots of the Faith From the Church Fathers to You edition by Mike Aquilina Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I am really enjoying these daily meditations and reflections. It is a great way to start my day! I was tired of easy, fluffy daily meditations, and this was the perfect remedy. I feel like the passages are well chosen - edifying, thought provoking, but not above anyone's head, either. I'm only 14 days in, but I am looking forward to the rest.
Nice feel as a book. I usually read it as a kindle. The texts chosen are very doctrinally informative and spiritually uplifting. THe translation is superb. Brings older stilted texts to the 21st century american standard usage.
I love this book. I love the LOOK of it, first of all. It looks sort of like leather and has a nice gold ribbon to keep my place. It looks like a SUBSTANTIAL book. But, you can't judge a book....well, you know the rest. The daily devotions build on one another, to make us aware of God in our world through our own observation and with the help of the church Doctors. Very gratifying read each day. It was a big investment for me, a bit pricey, but I don't regret it. If it was cheaper, I'd have given it 5 stars.
I love this book. I've been wanting to read the Church Fathers for a long time, but never knew where to start and their volumes in length have kept me away. Mike Aquilina has done a brilliant job of taking their massive works into manageable daily devotional readings. It's a very easy read. He doesn't distort the text with his opinion but rather adds just a couple sentences of commentary to reflect on the daily section. I started to read this book a the beginning of the year and have continued to read this book everyday. I take it with me to adoration and will read it usually after daily mass. I don't typically like paying a lot of money for books, but go ahead and buy this one. It's well constructed and beautifully written. I promise you will enjoy it. God Bless!
Great source for information on the early Catholic/Christian Church and its traditions. It shows that principal practices and beliefs in today's Catholic Church have their source and development from the earliest Christian times. It also provides a look into the pagan practices of Rome during those years. Aquilina describes the counter-cultural/anti-pagan role of the Church during those early years in such areas as its stand against infanticide, infant and youth murder, abortion (all legal at that time!), marital infidelity and many other areas. He also explains the growth of respect for martyrs/saints, respect for the true Gospels and many other practices. A good source for apologetics, RCIA classes explaining Church practices, and anyone else wanting to more fully and accurately understand the Catholic Faith.
Mike Aquilina has written several books on the Fathers of the Church. A Year With the Church Fathers--Patristic Wisdom For Daily Living, is an artistically beautiful book, with a reading from one of the Fathers for every day of the year. These are fairly brief meditations followed by one or two focus questions and a closing prayer. Knowing of Aquilina's work I had high expectations for this book and it more than fulfilled my expectations. If you want to get a feeling for the writings of the Fathers without having to work through a book of each of the Fathers, well this is the book for you.
Literally everything about this book is outstanding.
First, it is a marvelous resource for all of those who love the Church and the Church Fathers, a daily experience of the insights these men left behind during the formative years of the Catholic Church.
What subject are you interested in? Faith? Perseverance? God as Creator? You will find a wonderful passage from one of the Church Fathers that will inspire you and deepen your understanding of God's many gifts to those who are open to them.
Second, each entry is a short and readable but rich introduction to the writings of the Church Fathers, allowing the reader to consider delving more deeply into their greater works.
Third the package itself is first class with heavyweight paper, leather-like cover and fabric ribbon page marker. This book is made to last for a long, long time and I imagine that copies of this book will be passed on from generation to generation.
Mike Aquilina has done a magnificent job of presenting the Catholic Church Fathers to all of us who long to develop a greater familiarity with the inestimable gift of their wisdom.
